The Maryland muzzleloader hunt from 10/19 thru 10/21 was a bust. The weather was too warm and with the high winds the deer weren't moving much. We saw bucks but nothing we wanted to shoot. It seems as if the big ones were not active yet. We'll have to wait until firearms season at the end of November.
We just back from a great hunt in Illinois with Dale Carter. They have the perfect place to bow hunt. He has thousands of acres of cover, great food sources and very minimal pressure. The deer really have a chance to grow up especially with his 140" minimum. You see deer every day and you never sit the same stand twice. Every stand is better than the last one you sat in. They are installed perfectly with safe ladders at a comfortable height. They have hundreds of stands set up for any wind direction and you are always placed based on the current wind direction. Things are run very smoothly and professionally yet on a very relaxed basis. I was into big deer from day one. The first morning I almost got a big main frame 8 with matching stickers on the G2s but he was able to wind my "replacement clothes" that I had to buy because the airline lost my luggage (another story) and I was unable to get the shot. After retrieving my bag, I was back in business and was seeing deer on every sit. On Wednesday, I was fortunate to take a big 13 pointer that ended up scoring 167 & 7/8 Gross. He had a broken off 14 th point which would have put him in the 170 class. The deer only went 60 yards and we were able to find him with a camera crew. This was very exciting stuff! I'll post a picture on the website as soon as possible. All in all we had a great time and highly recommend Carter's Hunting Lodge in Milton, Illinois as a great place to go and experience quality hunting and great friends. |
