Even though it is still early August, I am starting to get that feeling of anticipation. It won’t be long now until many of the guys start leaving for the caribou hunts in Canada and Alaska. To me, that is the official start of the season. Here in Pennsylvania our bow seasons don’t open until October but by then we are already hunting in Maryland and wherever else we can scrounge up a hunt. Hopefully this year won’t be any different!
This year we have another full schedule of hunting adventures planned. We are working on some expanded opportunities in Pennsylvania around the suburban Philadelphia area where we live. Hopefully those will pan out and we will have some good hunting close to home. We are going to Dale Carter’s place in Milton, Illinois during the last week of October. This is one of my personal favorites. I can’t say enough about the country and the hunting in general. This week is the only week we can go due to other commitments but this year ought to be really interesting. The Hunter’s Moon comes real early this year on October 26th. The seeking phase will start a few days prior to the 26th` and we will be there at that time. Usually, we try to schedule around the full moon but this year there is nothing we can do. It ought to be interesting to see how the deer move during our shift. Last year the weather was perfect – it was 29 degrees on our first morning and held chilly through the whole week. We saw deer on every sit and could have shot a bunch of deer but Dale’s minimum is 140”. I ended up taking at 167 7/8” gross score 13 pointer. If his 14th point hadn’t been broken off he would have been in the 170s. I don’t expect this every year but it is exciting knowing giant deer are there. We just like to be in play when deer like that are moving around. Hopefully either Charlie or I will get lucky. You never know! Our yearly trip to Missouri is in early November. Last year we caught the rut just right and saw a ton of deer. Our big mistake was not holding out longer than we did. This year we plan to practice real patience. This is such a fun trip because of the friends we get to see and hunt with. The people in the Midwest are so friendly and helpful which makes our trip a true pleasure. Hopefully we will do well again. The weather plays such a big part. Usually we get cold temperatures and a good chance to “field test” the King of the Mountain clothing. There have been many days where it was a necessity and we were lucky to have it. This is classic deer hunting at its best and we can’t wait! After Thanksgiving, we head to Maryland for the shotgun/muzzleloader season. Last year was kind of a bust so we’ll see what happens this year. The place has tremendous potential but just too much pressure all around it. Where we stay with Ken Schrader is a real fun place with great food and atmosphere. That kind of makes up for the hunting. Check in with me from time to time during the season and I’ll update what’s been happening as the season progresses. Good luck on your own season. I sincerely hope you have a safe & successful year.
